Top 5 Australian universities in the 2016 Shanghai ranking:
1. Melbourne (40th)
2. Queensland (55th)
3. ANU (77th)
4. Monash (79th)
5. Sydney (82nd)

La Trobe University has jumped about 200 places in the latest Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU). It was placed 336th in the world, the best ever outcome for the University in this leading international survey.

Griffith University has jumped 45 places in world rankings in the past 12 months, according to the 2016 Academic Rankings of World Universities. The University moved to 318th globally, affirming its position among the top three per cent of the world’s universities.

James Cook University has strengthened its standing as a world-class research university, with a ranking in the 201-300 group of universities., according to the ARWU released by the Center for World-Class Universities at Shanghai Jiao Tong University. It is the first time ARWU has ranked JCU in the top 300 of the world’s universities. For the past six years, it’s ranked JCU in the top 301-400 of the globe’s universities.
